Welcome to Villa Maria - Elafonissi
It is only in recent years that road access to the far south-western corner of Crete has become relatively easy but the area has long been famous for the almost tropical lagoon and pink sands around Elafonissi, a low lying islet joined to the mainland by a barely submerged reef. Just a few km from here, in the hamlet of Chryssoskalitissa, you will find the newly built Villa Maria.

Villa Maria is a family house with all the modern comforts expected by today's visitors, yet furnished in a traditional style, fully in keeping with its setting.
On the ground floor, a large L shaped open plan living room and kitchen has a traditional style fireplace and some lovely antique furnishings but incorporates the more up to date features of air conditioning, a television, CD player and a fully equipped kitchen complete with a full cooker, fridge freezer and washing machine.
There are two bathrooms with prettily tiled corner baths, one on the ground floor and one upstairs. Also upstairs, there are three good-sized double bedrooms, all with views of the atmospheric nearby monastery (where legend has it that one of its steps appears golden to those pure in spirit) or the sea, just a stone's throw away. The furnished roof terrace has even more spectacular views and the newly landscaped garden has an abundance of shady areas for reading or snoozing.
Despite the fact that there is still little accommodation to rent in the area, there are a few tavernas and mini-markets between Chryssoskalitissa and Elafonissi, where, during the height of the day, the beaches attract day-trippers from other parts of the island. Nothing could be more idyllic though than luxuriating on the pink sands in the morning and in the evening, when the trippers have long disappeared, and imagining that you are in your own private paradise.
